A big benefit of online therapy is the flexibility it offers in terms of where you can connect from. Here's some information to help you prepare for your online therapy session. These may seem like small details, but taking a moment to consider them can significantly enhance your experience and help your therapist provide you the most effective support.
1. Find Your Private Sanctuary:
Choose a quiet, private space where you won't be interrupted or overheard. This allows you to speak freely and focus entirely on your session without external distractions.
If you live with others, let them know you'll need uninterrupted time. Consider using headphones for added privacy and to improve audio clarity.
2. Minimise Digital Distractions:
Place your phone on silent mode and out of arm's reach. This prevents notifications from pulling your attention away and ensures you can fully engage with your therapist.
Close unnecessary tabs or applications on your computer.
3. Power Up!
Ensure your device (laptop, tablet, or phone) is fully charged or plugged into a power source. The last thing you want is your session to be cut short by a low battery warning.
4. Comfort Essentials:
Have a box of tissues nearby – emotions can surface unexpectedly, and it's good to be prepared.
Keep a drink of water handy. Staying hydrated can help you feel more comfortable and focused throughout the session.
For Individuals:
Visibility is Key: Position your device so that your therapist can see your upper body (from the waist up). This allows for better non-verbal communication, as facial expressions and body language are important cues.
Hands-Free is Best: Avoid holding your device. Set it on a stable surface (like a desk or table) so your hands are free. This enables you to gesture naturally, take notes, or simply relax without worrying about holding the screen steady.
For Couples:
Both in View: Arrange yourselves so that both partners are clearly visible on the screen, ideally from the waist up. This ensures the therapist can see both of you and observe your interactions. Also make sure you can both comfortably see the therapist on your screen.
Facilitating Connection: Position yourselves so you can easily turn and speak to each other when prompted by the therapist, as well as engage with the therapist. A couch where you can sit side-by-side, or two chairs placed close together will work well. This promotes natural interaction and allows the therapist to observe your dynamic.
By taking these small steps, you'll create an optimal environment for your online therapy session, allowing you to get the most out of your time and enabling your therapist to provide the best possible support.
A Note on Your Location: Your therapist will confirm where you are connecting from at the beginning of each session. Please be ready to provide the address/location. This is important for your therapist to ensure they are adhering to professional and legal guidelines related to your best care.
